Bishop Briggs
Bishop Briggs is a Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter of dark pop. She was briefly known as BISHOP before reverting to the full form of her branding inspiration, her family's hometown of Bishopbriggs, Scotland, in order to avoid confusion with a heavy metal band of the same name. (The moniker itself was in turn adopted to avoid confusion with a celebrity who shares her real name, yet to be revealed.) Briggs was born in London, England to Scottish parents but attended school in Tokyo and Hong Kong before settling in Los Angeles after secondary school. There, she was heard performing in a local bar, which led to the recording of her first single, "Wild Horses," with the producing team of Mark Jackson and Ian Scott, who also helped launch indie rock band DOROTHY. The song was licensed for an Acura TV commercial and became an Internet hit. Exhibiting shades of trip-hop with acoustic guitar, electronic beats, and a strong dose of soul, "River" followed in early 2016 and hit multiple streaming and social networking charts. How to Dress WellAs How to Dress Well, Tom Krell makes ghostly, affecting R&B. While he was living in Brooklyn, Krell performed live experimental music as How to Dress Well by looping layers of his voice, and he began recording under that name after moving to Berlin. He released the first How to Dress Well EP, The Eternal Love, in October 2009 as a free download via his blog, and more EPs followed through April 2010. Krell signed to Lefse Records, which released his first official single, Ready for the World, in July 2010; his acclaimed debut album, Love Remains, arrived that October. Two years later, Krell returned with Total Loss, a more cleanly recorded set of songs -- inspired by trying to be positive in the face of adversity -- that featured co-production by XL Records executive Rodaidh McDonald. McDonald and Krell teamed up again for 2014's ambitious What Is This Heart? Two years later, Krell took his music in a much poppier direction on Care, which featured production by Bleachers' Jack Antonoff, Dre Skull, Kara-Lis Coverdale, and CFCF.Sundara KarmaU.K. indie quartet Sundara Karma emerged in 2014 with a bright, shimmering sound and great expectations. Though their name may be based in Hindu/Buddhist origin, the Reading-based band arrived emitting pure waves of pop, beginning with early singles "Indigo Puff," "Loveblood," and "Flame." Longtime friends Oscar Lulu (vocals, guitar), Ally Baty (guitar), Dom Cordell (bass), and Haydn Evans soon earned themselves a deal with RCA imprint Chess Club Records, and after a pair of well-received 2015 EPs, they completed work on their debut album, Youth Is Only Ever Fun in Retrospect. The Larry Hibbitt-produced LP is slated for release in January 2017.
